SPOUSES AND FAMILIES OFTEN SEE THE SIGNS FIRST

It’s time to confront the hidden mental health crisis in law enforcement.

Code Forty4 equips families to recognize warning signs early, respond with care, and protect the ones they love.

Because when the signs are ignored, the consequences can change everything.

The Numbers That Matter

Why Code Forty4 Exists

When something feels off at home, it’s hard to know what to do next. Code Forty4 was created to give law enforcement families clear guidance in moments that feel confusing and isolating. Here, you’ll find practical tools and honest conversations that help you recognize warning signs early and respond with confidence.

You shouldn’t have to navigate this alone.

It’s not just the critical incidents.
It’s the weight of every
ordinary one.

Law enforcement officers are trained to stay calm in chaos. To keep moving. To carry what they’ve seen without talking about it.

But repeated exposure adds up.

The calls that never make the news. The moments labeled “just part of the job.” The scenes they come home from without words.

Over time, the stress adds up and can look like:

  • They may be physically present but emotionally checked out. Quieter, less engaged, avoiding conversations and everyday moments. Things they once enjoyed may now feel like too much.

  • Small things that never used to bother them now trigger big reactions. You start to notice frustrations showing up quicker and stronger than it ever used to.

  • They seem flat or disconnected. Little emotion, little excitement, even in moments that used to matter. You may notice constant scrolling during quiet time, a movie, a date… honestly, all the time. It’s often a form of numbing out.

  • Sudden mood shifts. Leaving the room quickly. Something small  triggering a strong or unexpected reaction...dazed looks, sweaty or shaking hands, even panic. A trigger can come from everyday things we wouldn’t think twice about;  an intersection, a specific spot on the road, a house you drive by, a smell, a siren, or a sound.

  • This one is hard to explain but you feel it. They’re not quite the same, even if you can’t point to why. The look, the touch, the air around them just feels off. As spouses and family, we often feel it before we can describe it. It’s real, and you’re not alone.

Spouses and families are often the first to notice. Without context, language or support, it’s easy to minimize what you’re seeing. Or blame yourself.

Code Forty4 exists to help you understand what you’re seeing and remind you that silence is not the same as strength.

 Hi, I’m Amy Cortez

FOUNDER OF CODE FORTY4 AND A LAW ENFORCEMENT SPOUSE

My husband has served in law enforcement for more than 30 years. I’ve lived the quiet tension of loving someone who carries more than they can say out loud. I’m not a clinician. I’m a spouse who understands how confusing and isolating this can feel.

Code Forty4 was created to bring education, language, and honest conversation into homes like ours because awareness can protect relationships and change outcomes.
